Reflection

I have developed several attributes of the profile of the IB learning community. First I became very knowledgeable in this topic not only about the #blacklivesmatter movement but beyond that from the history of racism in the US to systemic racism. I was able to grow in this area through my research. Second I developed the traits of being a communicative person. In order to be successful during this project, I had to be able to ask for help or clarification when I didn’t understand something. I had to stop to reflect on my project and re-group then take into account the feedback and constructive criticism I was given in order to improve. I also interviewed people as part of my research. Finally, during this project, I had to be very open-minded and understand that everybody views these issues of racism differently and everybody has their own opinions. So not only did I keep an open mind to changing things but also when I was interviewing people when I didn’t agree with their thinking.

Since I grew up in the US from age 3 to 9, my perspective was that this was a US issue. But through my research, I realized that the same issues experienced by black people in the US are experienced by black people all over hte world. The way racisim manifests itself may differ, but people of color suffer in the same way by being treated as “less than” white people. The other thing I learned is that history repeats itself. It’s true, slavery ended in the United States a long time ago. But that didn’t mean that all people were treated the same from that point foward. Certain people of power will always find ways to opress other people. Racism continued to exist in many different forms and we see this in the US as well as in other countries
